Dr. Martina Vermathen is an Analytical Chemist who graduated at the University of Münster, Germany. She received her PhD in Analytical Phytochemistry at the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology & Phytochemistry, University of Münster. Subsequently, she spent 4 years as postdoctoral fellow and research assistant at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and San Francisco State University (SFSU). Her postdoctoral research was focused on the NMR spectroscopic investigation of model membrane systems and porphyrinic photosensitizers. She then joined the NMR lab at the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry & Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Bern, Switzerland. As principle investigator, she continued her research on porphyrinic photosensitizers, focusing on their encapsulation into phospholipid-based and polymeric carriers to develop drug delivery systems for use in Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). Her work is realized through numerous national and international collaborations and involves the supervision of Chemistry/Biochemistry students at the Bachelor-, Master-, PhD- and Postdoc-level.
